An Open Letter to IBPA Members
Dear IBPA Community,
Reed Exhibition's BookExpo 2018 kicks off in New York City on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 and runs through June 1st.
On September 25, 2017, the IBPA Board of Directors announced their decision to forego cooperative book display at BookExpo 2018. This decision came after months of deliberation and several dedicated conversations between IBPA and BookExpo brought on by a disappointing 2017 program.
Despite discontinuing the cooperative book display, IBPA continued to explore ways to actively represent IBPA members at BookExpo 2018. This letter announces the result of these efforts: three IBPA-produced educational sessions at BookExpo; a 20% discount on BookExpo passes; and an offsite IBPA happy hour.
Read below for more information.
Three IBPA-Produced Educational Sessions
Independent publishing is filled with great content and diverse thought leaders. The three IBPA-produced educational sessions showcase this reality. They are:
Opportunity Cost: Why Diversity is Financially Critical for the Book Industry
May 30th from 12:00PM to 12:50PM (Javits Center; Room 1E11)
The publishing industry is white, straight, and physically able (Diversity Baseline Survey 2015, Lee & Low Books), and the vast majority of books published are intended for these audiences. This lack of diversity is not just a societal problem, but it is increasingly becoming a financial problem for all players in the industry. Publishers, editors, reviewers, bookstores, and libraries that ignore America's increasing diversity do so at their own financial peril.
Developed for publishing and retail decision makers, this panel features prominent and diverse voices from around the industry who will discuss how all parties in publishing, big and small, can benefit socially and financially from diversity. The session will cover a number of issues, from the current state of affairs to developing action plans for taking advantage of this opportunity.
Networking Session: How Do You Measure Success?
May 31st from 4:45PM to 5:45PM (Javits Center; Room 1E16)
Every publisher, big and small, wants to hit the best-seller lists and win the major awards. It can also be exciting to consider additional definitions of success. How about reaching readers? Inspiring social change? Building the author's professional standing? Sending the book's creators on a book tour? Growing a tribe? Shining a light on a subject you're passionate about?
Join your fellow publishers, big and small, in this fast-paced meet-and-greet networking event. We'll challenge and expand our mental models about why we publish our list of books -- and even why we published a specific title. We'll find common ground and explore new territory in small groups that will keep shuffling -- all in a game format that comes with bragging rights and new connections! Bring your business cards and a sense of adventure.
IBPA Presents: Some of the Best Independently Published Books of 2017
June 1st from 12:45PM to 1:35PM (Javits Center; Room 1E16)
Hear the story behind the story as 10 winners of the Independent Book Publishers Association's (IBPA's) 30th annual Benjamin Franklin Award program share insight on the process of creating exceptional books while maintaining an independent spirit. This will be a series of back-to-back, 4-1/2 minute presentations following the Ignite philosophy of “enlighten us, but make it quick.” Attendees will walk away with a greater appreciation for the diversity of voices supported by independent publishing and a list of great books for their “to read” shelf!
20% Discount on BookExpo Passes
IBPA members are entitled to a 20% discount on tickets to BookExpo 2018. Current members are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the "Reimagined BookExpo" announced via Publishers Weekly on February 16, 2018 and email the IBPA office at firstname.lastname@example.org for discount details.
An Offsite IBPA Happy Hour
Join IBPA for LITERATURE & LIBATIONS on Thursday, May 31, 2018 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at a location walking distance from the Javits Center (TBA). This special reception is a happy 2-hour-celebration of the indie publishing community at BookExpo. RSVP here.
IBPA's Mission & BookExpo
IBPA’s mission is to lead and serve the independent publishing community through advocacy, education, and tools for success. The IBPA Board’s decision to forego cooperative book display at BookExpo 2018 was made in accordance with this mission and we are optimistic it will make the association stronger and better equipped to serve the needs of its members in the future.
As always, feedback from IBPA members is welcome. Please email IBPA CEO Angela Bole at email@example.com. She will be sure all feedback is shared with the full IBPA Board of Directors.
